Creative Inspiration: 5 Soothing Plants to Draw or Paint

Plants are a great place to begin looking for inspiration if you’re feeling stuck and looking for something to draw or paint.

Not only because they’re full of fun textures and patterns but also because their organic shapes are more forgiving than something more geometric like a building. (this means even if your drawing is a bit wonky it will still look good!) Also, I’m slightly obsessed with collecting them so why not draw some! :)

Succulents!

These are a great place to start with our soothing plants adventure because they naturally grow in clusters making them ideal for filling a page!

Monstera Deliciosa!

This plant is probably all over your Instagram feed OR maybe it’s even in your home (it’s in mine!) The leaves of this plant are really fun to draw because of their familiar heart shape all the splits in them!

TIP: If you’re struggling to draw these popular leaves start with a wonky heart shape and then draw some arches for the splits and you’re done!

Lavender!

This plant not only smells nice, but its flowers are suuuuuper cute! Sometimes you can find this at your local grocery store or floral shop (OR you may have it growing in your garden)! I highly recommend drawing from life with this one so you get the soothing smell while making a soothing drawing.

Leaves!

I know these are technically part of a plant, but look at them! Such a soothing pattern to draw! I recommend filling your page with this leafy pattern.

TIP: Start with the bigger shapes and then add some details to the drawing for a more complete look!

Trees!

Trees can be so fun to draw because of their unique shapes! This image is an awesome place to start because it focuses on a branch that gives us a very clear silhouette to start with versus a fuller tree where the shapes get lost (and it becomes a bit more intimidating to start...starting small is OKAY!).

I hope this sparked some inspiration for you to create something FUN! :) Nature is one of my favorite subjects to draw or paint because it's always surrounding us!
