Font FAQ
Font Licensing FAQ
Q: Do I own the font once I buy it?
Nope — you’re buying a license (permission to use it), not the font itself. The font still belongs to Studio Funshop, but you get the rights to use it within the license you choose.
Q: What’s the deal with “seats”?
A seat = one user. If it’s just you, one license is fine. If you’ve got a team of three designers all using the font, you’ll need three seats. Easy as that.
Q: Can I share the font file with my client?
Not unless they have their own license. If your client is the one using the font (installing it on their computer, running it on their site, etc.), the license should be in their name. If you’re just designing for them, you only need your own license.
Q: What if I hire a freelancer? Do they need a license too?
Yes. Anyone who installs or uses the font file directly needs their own seat. If they’re just delivering final artwork (like a flattened PDF), they don’t.
Q: Can I upgrade my license later?
Absolutely. If you start with a Desktop License and later decide to use the font on your website or app, you can just add the proper license when you’re ready.
Q: What’s not allowed?
A few big no’s:
- Don’t resell or give away the font files.
- Don’t use them in AI/ML training datasets.
- Don’t make new fonts or templates out of them.
- And don’t embed them anywhere not covered by your license.
Q: I’m still not sure which license I need. Help?
If you’re doing everyday design work (logos, packaging, social posts, print), Desktop is usually all you need. For websites, apps, ebooks, or templates, grab the matching license. And if you’re really stuck, email us anytime at hello@hellofunshop.com — we’ll help you figure it out.
Using Your Fonts: FAQ
Q: I see files like OTF, TTF, WOFF, and WOFF2. What’s the difference?
- OTF (OpenType Font): The best choice for design work. Supports extra features like alternates, ligatures, and stylistic sets.
- TTF (TrueType Font): Older format, super compatible, but doesn’t always support all the fancy extras.
- WOFF / WOFF2 (Web Open Font Format): Optimized for the web — smaller file sizes, faster loading. These are what you’ll use for your website.
👉 Quick rule of thumb: use OTF on your computer for design, WOFF/WOFF2 on your website.
Q: How do I install my fonts?
- Mac: Double-click the font file, hit “Install Font.” Done.
- Windows: Right-click the file → “Install.”
- Once installed, the font will show up in apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, Word, Canva (desktop app), and so on.
Q: What are “alternates” in a font?
Some fonts come with bonus character styles — like a fancy swash on an “A,” or a different lowercase “g.” These are called alternates (or stylistic alternates). They let you customize your text to look more unique and polished.
Q: How do I access alternates?
It depends on the software you’re using:
- Adobe Illustrator / InDesign / Photoshop: Open the Glyphs panel to see all characters and alternates. You can also turn on “Stylistic Alternates” in OpenType settings.
- Affinity Designer / Publisher: Similar — look for the Character panel and enable alternates.
- Canva / Microsoft Word: These apps don’t fully support alternates. You’ll usually just see the basic alphabet.
- Procreate: You can add alternates if your iPad has full OpenType support, but it’s hit-or-miss.
Q: Why don’t I see alternates in my program?
Not all programs support OpenType features. If you’re working in Word, PowerPoint, or Canva, you might only get the standard characters. For full access to alternates, use design software like Adobe Creative Cloud or Affinity apps.
Q: My font isn’t showing up in my app after installing — help!
First, make sure you closed and reopened the app after installing the font (most apps only load the font list at startup). If it’s still missing:
- Double-check you installed the right file (OTF for desktop).
- Restart your computer.
- If it still doesn’t work, drop us a line at hello@hellofunshop.com and we’ll help troubleshoot.
Q: Can I upload fonts to Canva, Figma, or other online tools?
Yes, but only if your plan supports custom font uploads (like Canva Pro or Figma Org). Just make sure you’ve got the right license type for how you’re using it.
Q: Do fonts look different in different programs?
Sometimes, yes. A font’s alternates and ligatures may show in Adobe but not in Word. And browsers handle web fonts slightly differently too. That’s normal — it depends on what features the software or platform supports.
Q: What Characters or Glyphs are included?
Each font incudes different characters, see product description for whats included for a specific font.
Q: What is the font name? I cant find it on my computer?
Make sure you installed the font you downloaded. Check your downloads folder. Then it should appear in your application. Studio Funshop fonts are formatted with Hello-[FontName].otf , just search hello [font name] and it should appear in your application.
