Font License Guide

Font License Quick Guide

How Font Licensing Works

When you buy a font from Studio Funshop, you’re not buying the font itself — you’re buying a license (a permission slip) to use it in certain ways. Fonts are creative software, and licensing helps protect the artist while giving you the freedom to use them in your projects.

How to Choose your License Type:

License Type ✅ What You CAN Do ❌ What You CANNOT Do Seats
Desktop Everyday design work. Logos, packaging, social posts, ads, print, rasterized game graphics Resell/share font files, install on shared servers, create new fonts/templates 1 per user
Web Embedding fonts on a website Use in templates, embed across multiple sites, use in web apps like Canva 1 per website
App Embedding in one mobile or web app, secure embedding (non-extractable) Use in multiple apps, share fonts, include in template/design apps 1 per app
Ebook Fonts inside one ebook, magazine, or digital card Use in physical products, websites, apps, or extractable formats 1 per title
Template Fonts in one template you sell or share (non-extractable) Share extractable or raw font files, use in logos/branding, print or physical goods 1 per template

What’s a “Seat”?

A seat is just a fancy way of saying one person = one license.

  • If you’re a solo designer, you only need one seat.
  • If you have a team of 5 designers who all install the font, you’ll need 5 seats.
  • If you’re buying for a client, you need to license it in their name

Why So Many License Types?

Different projects call for different permissions. A logo for your small biz isn’t the same as embedding fonts in a big app or distributing them in templates. Licensing makes sure you’re covered for your specific use case.

💡 Tip: If you’re not sure which license fits, start with Desktop (it covers most everyday design needs). If your project grows (website, app, publishing), you can always upgrade later.
